I am in the market for a sub-$1000 winter beater/commuter/auto-x/rally-x car, and yes, I know that is a lot to ask for.
I live in a city that has about ~100000 people in it and the used car market is not too hot at the moment or really ever.
A car that needs work for me is fine but I also will be doing the work in a driveway in front of the girlfriends parents house so pulling axles and transmission is not something I can do. The reason for the low price point is the likely $1000 bucks insurance will cost, and the fact I am saving for a house down payment.
So I come you to Oppo with the best options I have found on the local Kijiji. Give me your honest opinions.

The Subie most likely needs a new head gasket.

Ya I know that's a common problem with the outback, but hopefully that is all.

You could pick up a decent crx for that it'd be economical and a fairly easy winter hoonmobile.

if that GTP was one of the later supercharged cars I would say thats your answer.
Is the volvo one of the low pressure turbo cars?

Out of all those, I'd look at the Volvo.
The Datsun, Golf, and Outback all need major work upfront just to move. And that's just what they've come out and told you is wrong with them. The Pontiac is a distant second, since it'll have the troublesome DOHC 3.4 V6, and also because it looks like it's selling for well below market value.
The Volvo is absolutely your best bet from the information provided. And at 164km, it's just a baby.

It's a '94, so it'll be the awful 3400 DOHC.

There was a CRX about 3 months ago that looked decent but it sold the same day it was listed. Wish I was quicker on the draw in hindsight.

I like the GTP. That body style still remains as one of my favorite GM bodies. See if you can get the SLE Gran Prix McLaren. Super cool and easy to modify for some power given the Turbocharger :)
